The 2011 Australian $1 Bush Babies Kangaroo coin is a highly sought-after decimal release struck by the Perth Mint. Issued exclusively in partnership with Australia Post, this uncirculated coin forms part of the celebrated five-part Bush Babies series featuring stylized illustrations of native Australian animal joeys. It was originally distributed enclosed in a decorative presentation card and as part of a limited Philatelic Numismatic Cover (PNC) set featuring a matching stamp.
Design Details
The Reverse (Back): It features an original, stylized illustration by designer Elise Martinson. It depicts a wide-eyed baby Red Kangaroo joey nestled among Australian native flowers and bush foliage. A Christmas Beetle insect is nestled in the foliage to the right of the kangaroo. The designer's initials "EM" are placed within the foliage on the right side. The inscription "Australian kangaroo" runs along the upper right rim. The official "P" mintmark of the Perth Mint is positioned just above the baby's feet.
The Obverse (Front): It carries the classic Fourth Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, this profile depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The surrounding rim text reads "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA 2011", and the denomination "1 DOLLAR".
