The 2011 Australian $1 Bilby Coin is a popular collector's piece issued by the Perth Mint. It was released as part of the famous "Australian Bush Babies" series. Unlike standard five-kangaroo coins, this piece was minted strictly for the collector market and was never intended for general circulation.
The Design and Imagery
Designed by artist Elise Martinson, the coin captures the cute and gentle nature of Australia's native wildlife:
• The Reverse (Tail Side): Features a detailed, bright-eyed baby greater bilby with a curious expression. It sits amidst native wildflowers and foliage, looking closely at a grasshopper. It also bears the Perth Mint’s classic 'P' mintmark.
• The Obverse (Head Side): Displays the traditional effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Coin Specifications
Because it is a special collector's release, its physical dimensions are notably larger than standard circulating dollar coins:
• Composition: Aluminium Bronze
• Weight: 13.80 grams (standard circulating dollars weigh 9.00 grams)
• Diameter: 30.60 mm (standard circulating dollars are 25.00 mm)
• Finish: Uncirculated (UNC)
Release Formats
The coin was originally sold to the public in two distinct presentations:
1. Philatelic Numismatic Cover (PNC): A joint project with Australia Post. The coin is housed inside a decorative envelope featuring a matching $0.60 bilby stamp. It was officially postmarked on 6 September 2011 in Charleville, Queensland—a major conservation hub for the species.
2. Carded Uncirculated Pack: The coin was also sold on its own, sealed inside a colourful, themed Perth Mint presentation card.
Cultural Significance
The release of this coin raised awareness for the greater bilby, which is an endangered species threatened by habitat loss and feral predators. The coin remains a favourite for collectors who support the "Easter Bilby" initiative, which promotes the native marsupial as an Australian alternative to the traditional Easter Bunny.
